At 12.50 pm, Christchurch experienced a major earthquake aftershock. Our school is undamaged and all students have been evacuated from buildings as a precaution. There is no injury within the school and parents/guardians are able to collect their children as soon as possible and must sign them out at the International College.

Our school buildings will be checked to ensure they are safe.
We would ask that you contact parents urgently to assure them that their children are safe and we will post updates on our school website www.middleton.school.nz

Year 7 students on camp and Year 9 students on a field trip are also safe.
The Year 8 parents meeting this evening is postponed.

Hi Hiro

My house and family are all fine and the school undamaged and students safe. We evacuated buildings immediately after the quake yesterday and all students were collected by parents and guardians.
We are deeply saddened for those who have lost loved ones in our community,

Regards

Dear Hiro,

Thank you so much for your email message and for thinking of us and praying for us here in Christchurch!
Yes- we ourselves and all of our family members are OK and also the Alpha students and their homestays are OK and the staff and the Alpha building is fine…BUT, of course, there is terrible damage to the heart of our beautiful city and lives have been lost and many still missing. It seems that all of the East part of the City is very badly hit.

We have closed Alpha for classes for the rest of this week, since the City Council has asked that all schools remain closed ‘until further notice’. We have, however, told our students that we have the Alpha “doors open” so that anyone can come down and some of us, including me, of course, will be here for the working day, each day. We have advised students that they should generally stay home with their families at this time.

So many people have so many traumatic stories. Wayne, (husband) works on the fourth floor in the Telecom building in the Square. They building was swaying very badly when the earthquake hit (but it is very strongly built, because it is the Telecommunication centre)…when Wayne and his colleagues looked out of the window into the Square, there was a huge amount of dust everywhere and they couldn’t see anything…until the dust settled. Then they could see the tragedy that people were running everywhere to get out and that the Cathedral spire had crashed down and that many other buildings were falling down. They all raced out of the building and just ran North towards Hagley Park. The small lake in Hagley Park (Victoria Lake) had risen up and covered a large area of the park, where it is, so that Wayne had to wade through the lake to travel North. He took about 1 ½ hours to walk the 8 – 10 kms North to Bishopdale. I was very worried for a while because I could not contact him and finally he answered his cell phone and said he was walking and that he was near the Papanui railway line! I was so relieved to hear his voice and so surprised that he had walked all of that way!

We are thinking of and praying for everybody who has been so badly affected: for the families who have lost loved ones already and for all of the families who are waiting for their loved ones still trapped in buildings, and for all of the rescue workers who are trying to find the trapped people… oh dear! So sad! What a mess! It feels like the heart off our beautiful City has been ripped out!

とにかく今は、不明の方々の無事を祈るばかりです!!
